Facility Description
Portions of the East Pavilion of the Museum of Science and Industry were used by employees of the Metallurgical Laboratory and the Argonne National Laboratory. Although the facility was primarily used as office space, it is believed that radioactive materials were handled at this facility and that a spill of radioactive material may have taken place near the service elevator on the ground floor.
Site Function
Portions of the Museum of Science and Industry were occupied by operations of the Metallurgical Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory from August 15, 1946, to July 15, 1953. The work was conducted for MED and AEC. Based on the limited information obtained from records search and discussions with persons employed at the laboratory during that period, it is believed that some radioactive materials were handled at this facility; however, the type and activity-is unknown.
Site Description
The Museum of Science and Industry is located at 1701 East 57th Street. The areas occupied by the Meallurgical Laboratory and Argonne Laboratory included 36,000 square feet in the ground, first, and balcony floors of the East Pavilion and16,000 square feet in the second balcony of the west court of the central Pavilion.The ground and first floors of the East Pavilion are now occupiedby the University of Chicago for storage and office space and are alsoused in support of the museum’s operations. The second balcony of the West Court is used as office space by the Museum of Science andIndustry and the Academy of Interscience Methodology.
